Little Miss Sunshine Dog Dress

This is a cute little dress for your favorite small pet. Pattern is in sizes: Small 5 to 9 lbs. Medium 9 to 13 lbs. Large 13 to 17 lbs.

 

Small - 5 to 9 pounds or 2.3 to 4 kg 
Medium - 9 to 13 pounds or 4 to 6 kg 
Large - 13 to 17 pounds or 6 to 7.7 kg 

Abbreviations Used: 
ch=chain 
sc = single crochet 
hdc = half double crochet 
sl st = slip stitch 
dc = double crochet 
lp st = loop st 
blo=back loop only 
dec = decrease 
inc = increase 
yo=yarn over 
tog=together 
sp=space 
rem=remaining 

Gauge: 4 sts = 1" and 5 rows = 1" in sc 

Materials Needed: 

3 ½ oz of Yellow worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver Yarn.) Size H crochet hook, Small amounts of Pink and Black worsted weight yarn. Darning Needle and scissors.

Instructions: Instructions are in order (s, m, l)

With yellow yarn and H hook, make a magic circle. 

Row 1. Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) and make 6 dc in ring. Ch 3 and turn. (7 dc made.)

Row 2. In the same st as turning ch, make (dc, ch 2 and 2 dc. [Sk 1 dc, in next dc make (2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc)] across. Ch 3 and turn. (4 shells made.) 

Row 3. [In next ch2 sp make (3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc)] across. Dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. (18 dc and 4 ch2 sps made.)

Row 4. Ch 3 and turn. Dc in each of the next 2 dc, [in ch2 sp make a (dc, ch 2 and dc) dc in each of the next 4 dc] across. End with, in the next ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc) Dc in the last 3 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (26 dc and 4 ch2 sps made.) 

Row 5. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in last 4 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (34 dc made.) 

Row 6. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in last 5 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (42 dc made.) 

Row 7. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 6 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (50 dc made.) 

Row 8. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 7 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (58 dc made.) 

Row 9. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 8 sts. ) End here for Small Size and go to the finishing bottom below. Ch 3 and turn for sizes Medium and Large. (66 dc made.)

Row 10. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 9 sts. (74 dc made.) 

Row 11. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 10 sts. Ch 1 and end here for Medium Size and go to the finishing bottom below. Ch 3 and turn. (82 dc made.) 

Row 12. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 11 sts. (90 dc made.) 

Row 13. [Dc in each dc until ch 2 sp. In ch2 sp make (dc, ch 2 and dc)] across. End with dc in the last 12 sts. Ch 1 and end here for Large Size and go to the finishing bottom below. Ch 1 and turn. (98 dc made.) 

Finishing Bottom 

The next row will prepare for the edging. For each size omit 1 st for at total of 73 for Small, 89 for Medium, 105 for Large scs 

Row 1. (Sc in each dc until next ch2 sp. Make 2 sc in each sp) across remembering to omit 1 st for med and adding 1 st for Large Size. (73, 89, 105 scs made.) Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 2. Sc in 1st st. (Sk next st in next st make 5 dc. Sk next st, sc in next st.) across. 

End off and weave in the end. Set piece aside.

Sunshine Upper 

With Yellow and H hook, make a magic circle 

Rnd 1. In circle ch 1 and make 6 sc. Do not join but do mark 1st st. Tighten the circle.

Rnd 2. Make 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc made.) 

Rnd 3. (Sc in the next st, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (18 sc made.) 

Rnd 4. (Sc in each of the next 2 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (24 sc made.) 

Rnd 5. (Sc in each of the next 3 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (30 sc made.) in the next 

Rnd 6. (Sc in each of the next 4 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (36 sc made.) 

Rnd 7. (Sc in each of the next 5 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (42 sc ] made.) End here for small Size and go Finishing below 

Rnd 8. (Sc in each of the next 6 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (48 sc made.) End here for Medium Size and go Finishing below. 

Rnd 9. (Sc in each of the next 7 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (54 sc made.) 

Rnd 10. (Sc in each of the next 8 sts, make 2 sc in the next st) around. (60 sc made.) End here for Large Size and go Finishing below 

Finishing 

Join the next st with sl st. 

Rnd 1. (Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch and dc in last ch. Sk 2 sts and sl st in next st) around. 

Join with sl st in joining. End off and weave in the end. Set the piece aside. 

Eyes - Make 2 

With Black yarn and H hook, ch 4, Make 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next ch. Make 3 sc in end ch. Sc in next ch. Join the 1st st made with sl st. End off leaving a long tail.

With a double strand of white yarn and a darning needle, make a French knot on the eye as shown below. Set aside. Pin and sew eyes to the sun as shown below. 

Cheeks - Make 2 

With pink yarn and H hook, make a magic circle. Ch 1 and make 10 hdc in the ring. Join to the top of 1st hdc with sl st. End off leaving a long tail. 

Sew cheeks to sun as shown below. Thread darning needle with black yarn and sew mouth as shown below. Set aside.

Note: To keep the sun's spikes from curling, I like to brush Elmer's glue on the back side of the spikes only. NOT the rounded piece. I then lay the glued side down on plastic wrap or parchment paper. I then weigh it down and let it dry. 

Skirt 

Pick up the skirt once again and attach Yellow yarn to the right edge.

Row 1. Ch 1 Make 38 sts across the top for Small. Make 46 sc across top for Medium. Make 54 sc across top for Large. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2. Sc in each of the 38, 46, 54 sts across the top. Ch 1 and turn. 

Right hand side piece. 

Row 1. Ch 1 and sc in each of the next 6, 8, 8 sts. Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 2. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in the remaining 4, 6, 6 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (5, 7, 7 sts made.) made.) 

Row 3. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (5, 7, 7 sts made.) 

Row 4. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in the remaining 3, 5, 5 sts. Ch 1 and turn. (4, 6, 6 sts made.) 

Row 5. Sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (4, 6, 6 sts made.) 

Row 6. For size small sc in each of the 4 sts across. For Med and Large sizes sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in the remaining 4 sts. 

Buttonhole Row 7. Sc in 1st st, ch 2 and sk 3 sts. Sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. 

Row 8. Sc in 1st st. Make 2 sc over the buttonhole. Sc in the last st. Ch 1 and turn. Row 9. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc last 2 sts tog. End off and weave in the end. 

Left hand side piece. 

Flip the piece over and attach yarn at the opposite side as shown below. Repeat steps above.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 6", 8", 10" in length *or desired length to go from sunshine, criss-cross over chest and button.) 

 

Finishing

Sc around 3 sides. (2 long raw sides and 6 sts at bottom.) End off leaving a long tail for sewing. 

Once both pieces are finished, pin and sew to dress as shown below. (From the Buttonhole tab about 2 sts for Small Size, about 3 sts for Medium Size, and about 4 to 5 sts for Large Size

Sew buttons on opposite ends of straps and criss cross under the body for support.
