Bat Cape



Materials Needed

Size I crochet hook
15 ounces black worsted weight yarn, #4 (Red Heart Used) Darning Needle

Body of Blanket (Cape)

With Black and size I hook, ch 6.

Row 1: In 6th ch from hook, make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 3 and turn. 


Row 2: Make 6 dcs in the first ch-3 loop. Ch 1, dc in next st. Ch 1, make 6 dcs in the next ch 3 loop. End with dc in 3rd ch of beginning ch-6. Ch 6 and turn.



Row 3: Dc in first stitch. Ch 1, skip 2 dc, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in center dc make (dc, ch 3) twice. Dc once again in center dc. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in t;op of the turning end ch, make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 3 and turn.


Row 4: Make 6 dcs in the first ch-3 space. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in the next dc. (This is the center dc of the 3-dc group.) Ch 1, skip ch-1 space, make 6 dc in the next ch-3 loop. Dc in next dc. (This is the center dc.)


Make 6 dc in the next ch-3 loop. Ch 1, dc in the center dc of the next 3-dc group. Ch 1, skip next ch-1 space, make 6 dcs in next ch-3 space. Dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 6 and turn.


Row 5: Dc in first stitch. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in the next dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, in center dc make (dc, ch 3) twice. Dc in the same st. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, skip next dc, in next dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in 3rd ch of turning ch, make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 3 and turn.



Row 6: [(Make 6 dc in next ch-3 space. Ch 1, dc in center dc of next 3-dc group, ch 1)] twice.


Make 6 dc in the next ch-3 space. Dc in the next center dc. Make 6 dc in the next ch-3 space.



(Ch 1, dc in center dc of next 3-dc group. Ch 1, make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 space) twice. End with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 6 and turn.



Row 7: First side of triangle: Dc in turning dc. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. [Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 dcs. ] Repeat from [to] once more.


Middle of triangle: Skip 1 dc, in middle dc at tip make (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3 and dc.)

Opposite side of triangle: [Skip 1 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 1.] Repeat from [to] once more. End with Skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts.Ch 1, in top of turning ch-3 make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 3 and turn.

Row 8: First side of triangle: (Make 6 dcs in ch-3 loop, skip ch-1 loop and 1 dc, ch 1, dc in center dc of 3-dc group. Ch 1.) Three times.

Middle of triangle: Make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 space. Dc in center dc. Make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 space.

Opposite side of triangle: (Ch 1, skip 2 dcs and dc in center dc of 3-dc group. Ch 1, make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 loop) 3 times. End with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 6 and turn. 8

At this time your piece should measure 6" x 12"

Row 9: First side of triangle: Dc in first st. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. [Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts.] 3 times. Middle of triangle: Skip 1 dc, in middle dc at tip make (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3 and dc.) Opposite side of triangle: [Skip 1 dc, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 1.] 3 times. End with Skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in top of turning ch-3 make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 3 and turn.



Row 10: First side of triangle: (Make 6 dcs in ch-3 loop, skip ch-1 loop and 1 dc, ch 1, dc in center dc of 3-dc group. Ch 1.) 4 times. Middle of triangle: Make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 space. Dc in center dc. Make 6 dcs in the next ch-3 space.Opposite side of triangle: (Ch 1, skip 2 dcs and dc in center dc of 3-dc group. Ch 1, make 6dcs in the next ch-3 loop) 4 times. End with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 6 and turn.

Row 11: First side of triangle: Dc in first st. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. [Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts.] 4 times. Middle of triangle: Skip 1 dc, in middle dc at tip make (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 3 and dc.)Opposite side of triangle: [Skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 1.] 3 times. End with Skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in top of turning ch-3 make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 3 and turn.

Rows 12 – 18: Repeat rows 10 and 11 for pattern. Continue making increases, until 18 rows have been completed. End by completing row 10.

Next rows: Note: Center stitching is different.

Row 1: Dc in turning st. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. [Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in the next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts.] 8 times. This will bring you to the center sts. Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in next dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc) Ch 1, [skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts.


Ch 1, in next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 1] 8 times. End with Skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in top of turning ch-3 make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 3 and turn. (18 groups of 3 and 19 ch-3 loops.) Ch 3 and turn.


Row 2: 
(Make 6 dcs in ch-3 loop, skip ch-1 loop and 1 dc, ch 1, dc in center dc of 3- dc group. Ch 1) across. End with dc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Ch 6 and turn. (19 groups of 6 dcs.)


Row 3: Dc in turning st. Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. [Ch 1, skip 1 dc, in next lone dc make (dc, ch 3 and dc.) Ch 1, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts] across. End with, skip 2 dcs, dc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, in top of turning ch-3 make (dc, ch 3 and dc) ch 3 and turn. Ch 3 and turn.

Row 4: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 21 groups of 6 dcs. End with row 2. (Groups of dcs – One group in the center and 10 on each side for a total of 21)


Finishing: Ch 1, make 168 sc across last row. Approximately: Sc in each ch-1 space, skipping dc between each space. Sc in each of the 6 dc across last row. (168 sts made.) Ch 1 and turn. 13

1st point-Row 1: Ch 1, sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 20 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn leaving remaining sts unworked. (22 sts made.)

Row 2: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 18 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sts made.)

Row 3: 
Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 16 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (18 sts made.)

Row 4: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 14 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sts made.)

Row 5: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 12 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (14 sts made.)

Row 6: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 10 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sts made.)

Row 7: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 8 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sts made.)

Row 8: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 6 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sts made.)

Row 9: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sts made.)

Row 10: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sts made.)

Row 11: Sc first 2 sc together. Sc next 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sts made.) Row 12: Sc both sts together. End off and weave in end.


2nd Point – Attach yarn in next st to left of point just made, along bottom and repeat rows 1-12 above.

3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th points: Repeat all steps above. Do not worry if the piece does not lay flat. You will be gathering the top.


Finishing blanket Row 1: Attach black yarn to top right edge as shown in photo above. Ch 1 and sc in joining. Make 2 sc over each dc and 2 sc in each space across. End with sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (122 scs made.)

Row 2: Sc first 2 sts together. Sc in each of the next 38 scs. (Sc next 2 sc together) 21 times. Sc in next 38 sts. Sc last 2 sts together. (99 sc made.)

End off and weave in end.

Begin Hat

Round 1: With Black yarn and size H hook, ch 2. Make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark beginning st. (8 sc.)

Round 2: Make 2 sc in each sc around. Replace marker.(16 sc.) Round 3: Sc in next sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. Replace marker. (24 sc.)

Round 4: (Sc in each of the next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. Replace marker. (32 sc.)

Round 5: (Sc in each of the next 3 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. Replace marker. (40 sc.)

Round 6: 
Sc in each of the 40 sc around. Replace marker.

Round 7: (Sc in each of the next 7 sc, make 2 sc in next sc) around. Replace marker. (44 sc.) Note: Do not make last sc increase on this round. Just sc in the last st. 15

Round 8: Sc in each sc around increasing by 6 (16 for toddler) evenly spaced sc for a total of 50 (60 scs made.)

Rounds 9-18 (9-20 for toddler): Ch 1, sc in each of the 50 (60 for toddler) sc around. Replace marker and set aside.

Eye Hole Rounds

Round 21: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 20 sts. Ch 8 for eyehole, skip 5 sts, sc in each of the next 3 sts. Ch 8 for next eyehole, skip 5 sts, sc in each of the last sts.

Round 22: Ch 1, sc in each of the next 20 sts. Make 8 sc in ch-8 loop. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Make 8 sc in next ch-8 loop, sc in each of the last sts. End off and weave in end.

Finishing Hat


Right side: Fold blanket in half at top. Place a marker in center st. Place a marker in the 10th st to the right of the center marker and place another marker in the 10th st to the left of the marker. (You will be attaching the hat piece over these 21 sts.)



Pick up hat and find the center back sc. Mark this st. Place a marker in the 10th st to the right of the center marker and place another marker in the 10th st to the left of the marker. (You will be attaching these marked sts to the same marked sts on the blanket. Hold both the hat and blanket together with the wrong side of the hat facing the wrong side of the blanket.


Working through the scs of both pieces, sc in fist sc on hat and the first sc right of center on the blanket. Remove markers. Working through both thicknesses, continue crocheting through both the hat and the blanket until all 21 scs have been made. Remove all markers. Once hat is attached to blanket end off and weave in end.


Ears – Make 4

With black and size H hook, ch 11.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 scs made.) Rows 2-12: Sc in each of the 10 sc across. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 13-15: Sc first 2 sts together. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts together. Ch 1, turn.

Row 16: Sc first 2 sts together. Sc last 2 sts together. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sc made.)

Row 17: Sc both sts together. Ch 1 and turn. Sc in last sc. End off and weave in end. Set aside.


Finishing

Once all 4 ears have been made, hold 2 ears together attach yarn at edge and sc evenly through both thicknesses to join together. Sc both pieces together evenly around. Join to first sc with slip st. End off and weave in end. Sew ears to hat as shown on cover.
