Panda Back Pack

Abbreviations Used: 

st = stitch 

ch = chain 

sl st = slip stitch

Materials Needed: 6 1/2 ounces of black worsted weight yarn. (Red Heart Super Saver Used.) 1 ½ oz. of white worsted weight yarn. 1 ½ inch black button. Black sewing thread and needle. Two 1” eyes and glue. 

Measurements: 13” x 13”

Rnd 1: With I hook and black yarn, ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 23 sts. Make 3 sc in end ch. Working on the opposite side of ch, make 23 sc in each ch. Make 2 sc in same st as first st. Do not join but mark 1st st as beg st. (52 sc made.) 

Rnd 2: Make 2 sc in beg marked st replacing marker in 1st st made now and throughout. Sc in each of the next 23 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) 3 times. Sc in each of the next 23 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) 2 times. (58 sc made.) 

Rnd 3: Make 2 sc in 1st st. (Sc in next st) 4 times. (Hdc in next st) 4 times. (Dc in next st) 9 times. Hdc in next st) 4 times. (Sc in next st) 4 times. (Make 2 sc in next st) 4 times. (Sc in next st) 4 times. (Hdc in next st) 4 times. (Dc in next st) 9 times. (Hdc in next st) 4 times. (Sc in next st) 4 times. (Make 2 sc in next st.) 3 times. (66 sts made.)

Rnd 7: Hdc in blo of each st around, increasing 1 times or until 85 sts are on rnd. (87 hdc made.) Rnd 8: (Sc in next st, dc in next st) around. (85 sts.) Remove marker but do continue working in rnd. Row 9: (Dc in next sc, sc in next dc) around. (85 sts made.) 

Continue working in pattern until your work measures approx 14” from the base to the top Finish off and weave in all ends. 

Drawstring Rounds 

Mark backpack as follows:

1. Find center front of bag and mark. Count over 21 sts in either side of marker.. Place a marker in each of these sts. (43 sts counting marked sts.) 

2. Remove center marker.

Rnd 1: Attach yarn in right-hand side marked st. Ch 1 and sc in same st (replace marker,) and in next 2 sts. (Ch 2, sk 2 sts and sc in next 3 sts) 8 times. (Replace marker.) Sc in remaining st. Join to 1st st with sl st. 


Rnd 2: Ch 1 and sc in each sc around making 2 sc in each ch-2 loop. Join to 1st sc with sl st.


Rnd 3: Ch 1 and sc in each st around, (replacing markers as you go.) Join to 1st sc with sl st. End off and weave in end.

Make Drawstring - Make 2 cords 16” long each. 

How to make an I-Cord 

Step 1. With yarn color of choice and size I hook, make a slip knot and ch 2. Step 2. Sk 1 ch and pull up a loop in 2nd ch. (You will now have 2 loops on the hook.)

Step 3. Remove 2nd loop from hook. 

Step 4. YO hook and draw up a loop in the remaining loop on hook.

Step 5. (Be careful not to unravel the loop you dropped previously.

Step 6. Insert the loop you dropped earlier back unto hook. 

Step 7. YO hook and draw through the 1st loop only, (2 loops remain on hook.)

Step 8. Repeat from step 3 to step 6 for pattern until cord is desired length, 

To thread your drawstring, Tie a large knot at one end of the cord.

The two buttonholes at the center of the front are where you will start pulling the cord through. Starting at center, thread the cord in and out of the buttonholes. (Note: the cord runs across the front of the backpack only. Leave about 1” of cord sticking out at side edge and sew down

.

Begin Flap 

Mark;26 sts at back edge. 

Row 1: Attach white yarn at right edge. Ch 1 and sc in next 26 sts. You may remove markers. Rows 2-5: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st across. 

Row 6: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (24 scs made.) Row 7: Ch1 and turn. Sc in each st across. 

Row 8: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (22 scs made.) Rows 9-10: Ch1 and turn. Sc in each st across. 

Row 11: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (20 scs made.)

Row 12: Ch1 and turn. Sc in each st across.


Row 13: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (18 sc made.) 

Buttonhole Row 14: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in next 5 sts. Ch 3 for buttonhole. Skip 4 scs sc in next 5 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. 

Row 15: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in next 4 sts. Make 3 sc over ch-3 loop. Sc in next 4. Sc last 2 sts tog. (13 sc made.) 

Row 16: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (11 scs made.) Row 17: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (9 scs made.) Row 18: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (7 scs made.) Row 19: Ch1 and turn. Sc 1st 2 sts tog. Sc in each st until last 2 sts. Sc last 2 sts tog. (5 scs made.) End off and weave in end. 

Finishing Top Edge: Attach white yarn in any st at top edge. Ch 1 and sc in each st around top and flap. Join to 1st sc with sl st. End off and weave in end.

Measure button placement and sew button in place.

Shoulder Straps - Make 2 

Row 1: With black yarn and I hook ch 71. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (70 sc made.) 

Rows 2-5: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each of the 70 sts across. 

Finishing strap: 

Sew to back of backpack as shown below.

Center Hanging Loop 

With Black and I hook, ch 36. 

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (35 sc made.)

Rows 2-5: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each of the 35 sts across. 

Finishing Hanging Loop: 

Sew to back of backpack as shown below.

:Panda Face 

Eye Patches - Make 2 

Rnd 1: With Black, ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 4 chs. Make 3 sc in end ch. Working on opposite side of ch, sc in next 5 chs. Do NOT join but do mark 1st st now and throughout. 

Rnd 2: Make 2 sc in beginning marked st. Sc in next 3 sts. Hdc in next st. (Make 2 dc in next st) 3 times. Hdc in next st. Sc in next 3 sts. Make 2 sc in next st. 

Rnd 3: Sc in marked st. Make 2 sc in next st. Sc in next 3 sts. Hdc in next st. (Make 2 dcs in next st) 6 times. Hdc in next st. Sc in next 4 sts. Make 2 sc in next st. Join to marked st with sl st. End off leaving a tail to sew to hoodas shown below. Set aside.

Glue eyes to patches and embroider mouth as shown below. 

Ears – Make 2 

Row 1: With Black, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next st. Make 3 sc in end ch. Working on the opposite side of ch, sc in each of the last 2 sts. (7 sts made.) 

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn, sc in each of the next 2 sts. (Make 2 sc in next st) 3 times. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. (10 sts made.) 

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn, sc in each of the next 2 sts. Hdc in next st, make 2 dc in next st. (Make 3 trc in next st) twice. Make 2 dc in next st, hdc in next st. sc in each of the last 2 sts. Ch 1, working along bottom of ear, make 5 sc across bottom. Join to first sc with sl st. End off leaving a tail to sew to backpack as shown below.
