A Family that Sticks Together

Materials Needed: Size 7, B or 2 and size H crochet hooks. 20 ounces worsted weight #4 White yarn. 3 ounces worsted weight #4 Blue yarn. 2 ounces worsted weight #4 Black yarn. Scraps of Black or grey #5 cotton crochet thread. Scraps of Red #10 cotton crochet thread.
Size: 34” x 40”
Notions Needed: White tissue paper and black marker.
Row 1: With white yarn and size H hook, ch 111. Single crochet in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (110 sc made.)
Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (110 sc made.)
Row 3: Sc in each sc across. End off white and weave in end.
Rnd 4: Join Blue last sc worked. Ch 1, sc in each sc across. End off blue and weave in end.
Row 5: Join white in last sc worked. Ch 1, sc in each sc across. (110 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 6-8: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1 turn. End off white and weave in end.
Row 9: Join Blue last sc worked. Ch 1, sc in each sc across. End off blue and weave in end.
Repeat Rows 5-9 until 27 blue stripes have been worked.
Top Margin – Row 1: Join white in last sc worked. Ch 1, sc in each sc across. (110 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2-20: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
End off and weave in end.
Left Margin: With Red cotton crochet thread and size 7 hook, make a chain that will stretch from top margin to bottom margin. Pin chain about 5” in from left side. (About 16 stitches.) Sew in place.
Left Margin holes: Make 5
With grey or black thread and size B or #2 hook, ch 2
Rnd 1: Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join to first sc with sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, make 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc made.) Join to first sc with sl st.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, **sc in next sc, make 2 sc in next sc.* Repeat from ** to * around. (18 sc.) Join to first sc with sl st.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, **sc in next 2 sc, make 2 sc in next sc.* Repeat from ** to * around. (24 sc.) Join to first sc with sl st. End off leaving a 12” tail to sew to blanket. Set aside.
Placement of holes
Find vertical center of blanket, pin one hole in center of left margin. Pin one hole 5 ½” from the top and one 5 ½” from the bottom. Place last 2 holes 10” from top and 10” from bottom. Sew in place.
Draw stick figures on tissue paper. (Hint: draw on regular paper first and then trace onto the tissue paper.) Cut each character separately and work on one at a time. Pin to Afghan in a pleasing manner. Make a ch long enough for each line. Sew chain in place. (If you prefer, you could embroider each line with a chain st.)
Remember – there is no right or wrong way to draw your stick figures. Create your own family or let your child draw the figures.
